Happy Canada Multiculturalism Day everyone!
So how did it come to be? Well, here’s the long answer…
Thanks to the efforts of the Canadian Government in 1971, Canada adopted multiculturalism as an official policy. One result of this policy was The Canadian Multiculturalism Act that was passed in 1988 to protect, preserve and enhance multiculturalism in our country. The Canadian Multiculturalism Act affirms the policy to ensure that every Canadian receives equal treatment by the government regardless of their religion, ethnicity and background that respects, honors and celebrates diversity. On November 13, 2002, the Canadian Government designated June 27 of each year as Canadian Multiculturalism Day.
Canada Multiculturalism Day is an opportunity to celebrate our diversity and our commitment to equality, mutual respect and appreciation towards various multicultural groups in Canada. Prime minister Justin Trudeau issued a statement today to highlight the Canadian Multiculturalism Day, “Canadians come from every corner of the world, speak two official languages and hundreds more, practice many faiths, and represent many cultures. Multiculturalism is at the heart of Canada’s heritage and identity – and as Canadians, we recognize that our differences make us strong.”
Let’s all celebrate and appreciate our identity and diversity as Canadians not just today but every day. As prime minister Justin Trudeau rightly said in his words, “Canada is a country strong not in spite of our differences but because of them.”
